FAQ – Commercial Drivers Regarding Permissible Actions During the COVID-19 Emergency – April 13, 2020
If you develop any of these emergency warning signs* for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately:
- Trouble breathing
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
- New confusion or inability to arouse
- Bluish lips or face
*This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.
Call 911 if you have a medical emergency: Notify the operator that you have, or think you might have, COVID-19. If possible, put on a cloth face covering before medical help arrives.
Public Health Recommendations after COVID-19 Exposure

- There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
- The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
- The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
- Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
- Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
- These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
- Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.

Uber has partnered with trucking startup CloudTrucks to make it easier for its ride-hail drivers to get jobs as truckers during the pandemic.
Described as a “business in a box,” CloudTrucks is designed to make it easier for truck owners and operators to run their businesses. Through software and data science, CloudTrucks aims to reduce operating costs for truck drivers and improve revenue, cash flow and costs.
Roadside enforcement could decline as COVID-19 picks up
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued an FAQ on Wednesday based on concerns from state agencies about the effect that changes in how they conduct roadside inspections as a result of COVID-19 may have on their eligibility for funding under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP).
Responding to questions about whether police officers can waive roadside inspections as part of a traffic enforcement stop and instead just issue warnings or citations if there is a violation, the FMCSA advised states to follow their commercial vehicle safety plan (CVSP) as much as possible.
88,300 truck drivers lost their jobs in April, and it’s the biggest trucking job loss on record
While truck drivers have been deemed “essential” workers during the coronavirus pandemic, freight volumes and rates have collapsed this year.
Much of the economy, most notably manufacturing, is at a standstill. As a result, trucks aren’t moving.
