Revamp Your Roadtrip

As a CDL driver, sure you cross the country every day, but have you ever really seen what it has to offer? Dust off your next travel itinerary and make room for these quirky roadside attractions. We’re sharing some of our favorite road-trip pit stops, crisscrossing the continental U.S.

Salvation Mountain: Niland, California

This gem was hand-crafter over years of hard work, by resident artist, Leonard Knight, to create a piece of work that not only he, but everyone else, could enjoy. The mountain, located off Highway 111 about 80 miles southeast of Palm Springs, is made of adobe clay and covered in thousands of gallons of colorful paint, featuring murals, messages and imagery depicting Bible verses. We suggest visiting fall-spring, as the summer time temperatures can rise to 120 degrees.

Carhenge: Alliance, Nebraska

We love this modern take on Stonehenge, there’s something so uniquely American about it. All cars pictured are vintage American models, by the way, that’s definitely something you can tip your hat to. You can find this clever adaptation in Alliance, Nebraska, just off of Highway 87 – who said Nebraska was a fly-over state? Certainly not us. There is also a gift shop on-site, but note it is only open during the summer months. Carhenge is free to visit and it is open 24/7 year-round.

Cadillac Ranch: Amarillo, Texas

One man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure, and this art instillation is living proof. The idea was put into motion by a local millionaire, with the help of a group of San Francisco-based artists. You’d never guess it, but the grafitti wasn’t part of the original plan, and has been added to by the many tourists that visit this Amarillo, Texas based site every year. You can stop by Cadillac Ranch 24/7, off of Highway 40 in good ol’ Amarillo, Texas.

Dog Bark Park Inn: Cottonwood, Idaho

This pit-stop is a must-see for dog lovers. Not only can you pop by for a visit, but you can even stay, in the world’s largest beagle – no we aren’t joking! Stay in the belly of Sweet Willy, whose rooms are decorated with dog themed art and literature – would you have it any other way? Visit this ‘good boy’ and the adjacent gift shop in Cottonwood, Idaho, located off of Highway 95.

Bubblegum Alley: San Luis Obispo, California

Okay, this one is a little gross, so we apologize for that. BUT this alley is 70 feet long and 15 feet high and covered in some estimated thousands or even millions of wads of bubblegum. If you aren’t too grossed out, you can visit, and even add your own gum 24/7. You can find the alley down Higuera Street between the Ambiance Clothing Boutique and the Blast 825 Taproom. Don’t forget to POP by, get it?

Flintstones Bedrock City: Coconino County, Arizona

Make sure you Yabba-Dabba-DO go visit this last spot on our list, you’ll have a rockin’ good time. This recreation of Bedrock is appropriately located in the barren desert landscape of northern Arizona (off of Highway 64 and about 25 miles south of the Grand Canyon – perfect detour for a summer road trip) and features classic sites straight from your childhood, including Wilma’s Laundry and Barney’s Grocery. You’ll also find Fred’s Diner on-site, where you can munch on Bronto Burgers and a slice of Gravelberry Pie. You can even set up camp at the on-site RV park. At $5 a person, we think this deal is smashing! BAM BAM!
