Are you prepared for inspection? International Roadcheck is just around the corner, hitting the highways from May 13th to 15th, 2025. This year, like every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will be out in full force, conducting thousands of inspections across North America. While the specific focus areas can shift, you can bet they’ll pay close attention to the essentials that keep our roads safe for everyone.

We know International Roadcheck can be a source of stress for even the most seasoned long-haul drivers. That’s why we’ve put together a comprehensive pre-Roadcheck checklist to ensure you’ve got all your ducks in a row before the DOT and CVSA roll into town.

Your Pre-Roadcheck Pit Stop: The Ultimate Checklist

Consider this your go-to guide to ensure you’re compliant and confident when an officer signals you to pull over. Let’s dive in and make sure you’re running clean and legal!

I. Driver Credentials & Documentation: Your Foundation

Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): Double-check that expiration date and ensure you have the correct class and endorsements for your rig. Don’t leave home without it!

Medical Examiner’s Certificate: Is it current? Keep the original or a compliant electronic version readily accessible. A lapsed medical card is a major red flag.

Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR): Do you have copies of your most recent DVIRs and any documentation showing that reported defects have been addressed?

Registration Documents: Keep those current vehicle registrations for both the tractor and the trailer handy.

Insurance Information: Make sure your proof of current insurance coverage is easily accessible.

Operating Authority/Permits (if required): Depending on your operation, you might need specific permits. Ensure you have them.

Shipping Papers/Bill of Lading: Accuracy and accessibility are key here. This includes any hazardous materials documentation if that’s your load.

Placards/Labels (for Hazmat haulers): If you’re carrying hazardous materials, are all placards and labels correctly displayed and in good shape?

Hours-of-Service (HOS) Records

Paper Logs (if applicable): Are your logs up-to-date, accurate, and in line with regulations? Have the last seven days accounted for?

ELDs: Is your Electronic Logging Device functioning flawlessly? Are you confident in your ability to operate it and transfer data if requested?

II. Vehicle Maintenance & Safety: Keeping You and Others Safe

Brakes

Air Brake System: Listen for leaks, watch for proper pressure build-up and release, and ensure your audible warning devices are working.

Service Brake: Feel them out – are they operating smoothly and effectively?

Parking Brake: Test it to ensure it engages and holds the vehicle securely.

Antilock Braking System (ABS) Indicator Lights: Confirm they cycle correctly upon startup.

Tires

Tire Pressure: Get that gauge out and ensure every tire is at the recommended PSI.

Tire Condition: Walk around your rig and inspect for cuts, bulges, sidewall damage, and any signs of uneven wear.

Tread Depth: Know your minimums and ensure you’re within legal limits.

Wheels & Rims

Wheel Fasteners: Give those lug nuts a visual – are any loose, missing, or damaged?

Wheels & Rims: Look for cracks, bends, or any other damage.

Suspension

Springs, Airbags, Torque Rods: Check for any signs of damage or deterioration.

Shock Absorbers: Make sure they’re still doing their job.

Steering

Steering System: Feel for excessive play or any binding.

Power Steering Fluid Level: Top it off if needed.

Lights

Headlights (High & Low Beam): Test both settings.

Taillights: Ensure they’re both shining bright.

Brake Lights: Have someone check them as you press the pedal.

Turn Signals (Left & Right): Front and back!

Hazard Lights: All flashing in sync?

Clearance and Marker Lights: Every light in place and working?

Rearview Mirrors (Interior & Exterior): Clean them up, adjust them properly, and ensure no damage obstructs your vision.

Windshield & Wipers

Windshield: Any damage that could impair your view needs attention.

Windshield Wipers: Are they in good condition and clearing the glass effectively?

Windshield Washer Fluid: Top it off!

Fuel System

Fuel Leaks: A critical safety issue – inspect carefully.

Fuel Tank Security: Make sure those caps are on tight.

Exhaust System

Exhaust Leaks: Listen and look for any signs.

Exhaust System Integrity: Ensure all components are properly mounted.

Coupling Devices (Tractor-Trailer)

Fifth Wheel: Proper lubrication, secure locking jaws, and no damage.

Kingpin: Check for wear and any signs of damage.

Safety Chains/Cables: Correct length and in good condition.

Electrical Connections: Ensure lights and brakes are communicating correctly.

Cargo Securement

Tie-Downs, Straps, Chains: Are they in good condition, rated appropriately, and applied correctly?

Load Securement Devices: Inspect for any damage or defects.

Proper Loading: Is your cargo distributed and secured to prevent any shifting?

Emergency Equipment

Fire Extinguisher: Is it charged, the right type, and easily accessible?

Warning Devices (Reflectors/Triangles): Do you have the required number, and are they in good shape?

First Aid Kit: Is it adequately stocked for basic needs?

III. Driver Fitness & Preparedness: You’re the Key!

Fatigue Management: Prioritize your sleep and strictly adhere to hours-of-service regulations. Fatigue is a major safety risk.

Pre-Trip Inspection: Make it thorough every time. Catching issues early can save you headaches down the road – literally.

Knowledge of Regulations: Stay up-to-date on all applicable federal and state regulations. Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to roadside inspections.

Professional Demeanor: Be respectful and cooperative if you are inspected. A calm and courteous attitude can go a long way.

Clear Communication: Be prepared to answer questions clearly and provide requested documentation promptly.
